Springing into Motion at Pontotoc Middle School
"On behalf of Pontotoc Middle School, I would like to thank the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation for providing this opportunity for our students to learn about healthy eating through growing and harvesting fresh produce. These are skills that will stay with them far beyond their middle school years to foster a lifestyle of health and wellness." Amy Dearman, Gifted Students Instructor, Pontotoc Middle School
With funding from the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, the Springing into Motion initiative is providing hands-on gardening
experience to to students at Pontotoc Middle School. Fresh fruits and vegetables harvested from the garden are used for healthy meal preparation in
the school cafeteria and sharing with the surrounding community.
The Springing into Motion initiative is designed to promote and support the health and wellness of students, faculty and the community by increasing
awareness of factors and resources contributing to a healthy lifestyle and empowering individuals to take responsibility for their own health. One of
the main goals of the initiative is to instill in everyone involved the desire to have and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Situated parallel to the school cafeteria, the garden features raised vegetation beds, potted herbs, hanging vegetation and a greenhouse. The design allows for the care and growth of plants while optimizing learning across the curricula with innovative ways to teach students about wellness.
