Mississippi Gets Fit 4 Change

Competition and challenge have long been an integral part of politics, but Mississippi's most recent legislative battle focused on trimming the fat – in the form of more than 3,000 pounds!

The Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation awarded a $255,000 grant to the Paul Lacoste Sports "Fit 4 Change" program, in which Mississippi lawmakers, state employees and citizens participated in a 12-week fitness and nutrition training program.

Lacoste is a former Mississippi State University and professional football player with a passion for improving the health and lives of Mississippians, and has channeled that energy into a total lifestyle transformation program.

"Fit 4 Change" participants included members of the House, Senate, Governor Haley Barbour's staff, state employees and regular citizens. Workouts began in early January 2011, and were held four days each week at the Walter Payton Center on the campus of Jackson State University. Participants worked their way through grueling boot-camp style classes designed to build strength, endurance and shed pounds. At the end of the 12-week program, more than 200 participants culminated their success with a competitive 5K (3.1 mile) run in the shadow of the State Capitol Building.

"The 'Fit 4 Change' program has demonstrated tremendous success in helping participants set goals, challenge themselves and transform their health and their lives," said Sheila Grogan, Executive Director of the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. "Everyone involved is leading by example through their participation and by encouraging others to take the first steps toward a healthy lifestyle."
