Search Your Heart / 2006

Heart disease and other related cardiovascular diseases kill more than 900,000 Americans each year, with Mississippi leading the nation in the number of deaths. The African-American population is especially vulnerable, which led the American Heart Association to introduce "Search Your Heart," a program aimed at informing the community about heart-related diseases through faith-based channels. Churches and other faith-based organizations are increasing their profile as resources for health-related news and information, including seminars, health fairs and screenings, support groups and exercise programs. "Search Your Heart" is working with local churches to provide information on physical fitness, nutrition and screenings to the communities they serve.

"Without the support of the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, we would not have been able to engage more than 40 local community churches and community groups with this lifesaving program. The staff and board are always willing to help, supplying us with materials and their supportive presence."
