Institute for Disability Studies
/ 2006
The Institute for Disability Studies is the recipient of a grant to develop health and wellness curriculum for children in grades K-1 in Madison County Schools. These health literacy education strategies will consist of classroom activities and will involve other family members, including parents and siblings. The project will instill awareness of health literacy and disability issues, improve parent and adult literacy levels affecting decision making regarding healthcare services, and develop tools focused on increasing family health literacy aligned with the Mississippi Department of Education's Framework.
"This project capitalizes on the existence of the Mississippi Department of Education's Health Curriculum Framework and provides kindergarten and first grade teachers techniques and tools to integrate comprehensive health promotion and education strategies into the larger curriculum. This way there is a greater opportunity to meet health education and regular curriculum mandates."
