Project Fit America / 2006

Project Fit America held groundbreaking ceremonies in DeSoto County on September 22 and at King's Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven on October 5. The Foundation awarded a grant to the program which teaches fitness skills to children and provides fitness equipment specifically designed for growing kids. Program instructors provide teaching techniques, student motivation strategies, time management and safety, and helps teachers implement the school plan and Project Fit America curriculum, which focuses on nutrition, smoking prevention and understanding the body and exercise. Project Fit America worked with researchers to develop age-appropriate equipment specifically designed to help develop particular muscle groups. There is a two-year monitoring program that tracks the progress of the children and their development. They have the opportunity to engage in friendly competitions between themselves and are rewarded for their progress with special incentives.

"With your help, we have installed outdoor gyms at six schools in Desoto County. Mississippi leads the national in childhood obesity and together, the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation and Desoto County Schools are leading the state and nation to break the cycle of obesity. Our goal with Project Fit America is to improve the health status of children and enable schools to have permanent resources to teach lifelong health and wellness year after year."
