Mississippi in Motion / 2006
Mississippi in Motion is a statewide initiative for adults sponsored by the Mississippi State University Extension Service. A grant from the Foundation expanded their 12-week program promoting weight loss through exercise, dietary changes and social support. When each participant received screenings for glucose, BMI and blood pressure, they were able to identify conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which they are working to control. Additionally, they have been able to purchase pedometers for all program participants, allowing them to more accurately track their daily exercise. The concept originated from a program in West Point, Miss. where approximately 1,000 participants collectively lost more than 6,000 pounds.
"By collaborating with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, we can provide the people of Mississippi the knowledge and skills for prevention strategies to reduce chronic diseases. People are excited by the health program, which will help improve their quality of life. By educating parents in healthy lifestyles choices, we are providing a brighter outlook for the children of tomorrow."
